December 1 Advent Devotion written by Sara Herrington Jones

(Jesus said) “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, … even if you say to this mountain, “Be lifted up and thrown into the sea, then it will be done.”      Matthew 21:21

A prayer of faith is more than just a wish. A prayer has muscle. Jesus told his disciples that if they prayed with enough faith, they could move mountains.

When you pray, open your heart to what God is going to do. To paraphrase a popular children’s Christmas movie, “BELIEVE!”

As you consider the mountains in your life, don’t fear the forbidding climb or the daunting peak that seems so far away. Instead, look to God—the very God who made the mountains of earth and the same God who can move them— who is with you, calling to you, and giving the Holy Spirit to be your counselor, guide and strength.

What “mountains” do you have to move or cross over today?

Prayer: Almighty God who made the mountains and the sea, earth and sky:

Help me to focus only on You as my Source of strength and my shield against the future that seems foreboding so that I may grow in faith and fortitude, trusting ever more deeply in Your steadfast strength and loving-kindness. Lifted to you, Father, through Jesus the Son and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
