December 11 Advent Devotion Written by Anna Campbell

Fire is often a symbol of the Christmas Spirit. This exothermic chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of heat and light is meant to ignite a Christmas flame within ourselves.

Each year as a child, my father would read “The First Christmas” by the fireplace. I remember that the cover had a small fire, and the space around it was filled with the Nativity scene. This tiny flame was there to warm all those who gathered around it.

Just like the child, a spark of light—a gift in the form of the baby—was born, and all those who gather around him find warmth. A spiritual energy was delivered to be transferred and transformed, but never destroyed. Whether the Spirit is found in the flickering light of a fire or by guidance of a shining star, gather amongst others to share it.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Fuel the flame within our hearts so that we can share it with those around us. Help us to light the way for others to gather in your warmth this season of giving. Through kind words and actions, we are vessels of energy to pass the Spirit and ignite more flames. In Your Son’s birth we are blessed. Amen.
