Showers of Blessing

Acts 28: 23-31

There are several old favorite hymns that fall into the theme of blessings. “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing,”” Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” “Blessed Be the Name,” “Blest Be the Tie,” “Blessed Assurance,” “Count your Blessings,” just to name a few.

This time of year especially reminds me of how truly blessed I am. In the interest of time and attention spans, I will not name all, but just a few of the things that constitute my blessings.

My parents. What a loving and caring Christian upbringing they provided me. Dad taught me a love of music and sports and to keep a level head, even when it’s difficult. Mom also taught me the love of music, to set a good example, and to treat everyone with respect. She is so strong and truly an inspiration, not only to me but to many.

My brother and his family. Yeah, he’s goofy and all, but when he came along all those years ago (so yes, I’m the oldest), I was one happy big sister. We have shared many laughs, tears and secrets over the years. Additionally, he had the good sense to marry someone with wonderful Christian values who is an integral part of our family. As a bonus, they have given me two nephews who provide me intense joy and love that I never knew was possible. I had no idea that kids could be this awesome.

My friends. There is a saying that you can’t have more than a handful of close friends; all the rest are just acquaintances. I beg to differ. I have been blessed with many long-time friends who have been with me through thick and thin. Although we may not talk every day or see each other often, in some cases, the bond is always there.

My work. I have enjoyed a long career with a company that I admire. It has afforded me a chance to travel, grow, and has provided me with mentors and friends over the years who have been a large part of my life. My current role is one I enjoy, and I work with a wonderful team.

My church, past and present. I grew up with a church family that showed me what a being a Christian truly meant. There were so many people from those days who played a role in forming my Christian beliefs. In relocating and other things over time, I wandered away from church. While my belief remained strong, I had no intention of becoming a part of another church. Now here I am four years later, and I couldn’t be happier. This church means so much to me and our family. God always has a plan.

Prayer: Lord, in this season and always, we are grateful for all of our blessings. Thank you for walking beside us every day and loving us, though we may sometimes falter. Help us to pay our blessings forward to those around us. In your name, Amen.
