Social Justice Opportunities

An invitation for your active participation

As you, hopefully, are snuggled in for a cold winter's evening, I would like to invite you to watch with me a four-part special premiering tonight (February 16) on our local PBS station beginning at 9 p.m. The series is called, "The Black Church" and will be hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. the Havard Scholar, and host of the PBS show, "Finding Your Roots." Also, if you have a Facebook account, you are invited to watch a presentation and conversation hosted by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Kentucky with Kasey Jones, past CBF moderator and Associate Coordinator for Outreach and Growth with CBF national. CBF of Kentucky is sponsoring 2021 conversations around issues of Missions and Racial Justice. Unfortunately, this was held during our normal Vespers virtual gathering, but thankfully they have posted this event for later viewing. You can find it here and follow this page as new events are sponsored.

Finally, our church will be participating with other churches in over 18 different states within our Alliance of Baptists community on a five-year study of issues regarding racial justice in predominately white congregations. This experience will involve the whole congregation with some surveys but will need a team of 8-10 members who will help lead us in taking this journey together. If you would like to know more about this effort, please email me (mark@lexcentral.com) and I'll send you the prospectus and follow up with a phone conversation. I would love for you to be a part of this focused initiative.

These are just three opportunities. I know there are many other meaningful and different things you are doing in your own networks in working toward greater racial justice in our land. I applaud them all. By working together, let us pray and endeavor for meaningful change, that can help translate our hopes and prayers into meaningful action.
