During the month of March, Mark Johnson will lead conversations concerning race on Wednesdays at noon.  Conversations will focus predominately on helping white people to better understand themselves as they are seen through the lens and experience of black voices. Each week we will read an article by a black author who reflects on interactions with the larger white community, and then discuss the implications together.  The articles are available to download below, even if you can't attend the conversation. The church will provide water, tea and coffee, but please bring any lunch items you would like for yourself.  We will finish our conversations by 1 p.m.

Here’s our schedule of articles with a final session inviting Dr. Mark Medley with the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky:

  • March 1 - “The Souls of White Folk” by W.E.B. Du Bois -  Download Article
  • March 8  - “Representing Whiteness in the Black Imagination” by bell hooks - Download Article
  • March 15 “Can White People Be Saved?” by Willie James Jennings.
  • March 22 “What Does Jesus Have to Do with Whiteness”  by Kelly Brown Douglas.
  • March 29 “The Theology of Hip Hop” with special guest Mark Medley.

We hope these conversations will spark more reading and inquiry in your life with your family, friends, and in our beloved community of Christian faith.
