Community Connections with Dr. Deborah Alexander (video)

At our first Community Connections meeting, we had an enlightening discussion with Dr. Deborah Alexander about her current work with Afghan refugees in our community. Dr. Alexander is uniquely qualified from her own experience as one of the first civilians to enter Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks.

During her 10 years of service as a US Department of State senior advisor and political officer in Afghanistan, Dr. Alexander focused on elections, women's advancement, and countering violence. She has also worked in Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Pakistan, Somalia, and Ukraine.

Of course with her extensive experience abroad, including Ukraine, our discussion also touched on current events in the region. Dr. Alexander shared about efforts to support our Ukrainian neighbors in our community as well.

Even in discussing these difficult topics, Dr. Alexander's compassion, positive spirit, and persistent work for peace and justice in our world engenders hope in dire circumstances. She reminds us that public service is the same whether it's in our own neighborhoods or across the globe.
